I am not "a southern maine person". Most of my life was lived in the county. However, you do need to recognize the population in southern maine, vs. northern maine. Many more voices. That was my point. They have more voices, more votes, more traffic, more people, on and on and on. I believe strongly that children are better off being raised up north, however, things in life change that take us in different directions. The county will always hold my heart, but I do see both sides living both places. I also deal with the traffic, the tourists, and money needed for roads etc. in Southern Maine. Just throwing out food for thought.

There are alot more people in southern maine because of the ocean...hello...and the ocean attracts tourists....hello....so by the time you "people" from southern maine come to northern maine....you as well as the govenor seem to agree that there pretty much isnt anything to peak your curosity and so your boredom along with your attitude traveled the I95 with you......No one said there was anything wrong with living in Southern Maine....it was just mentioned by a few how there is so much emphasis on the southern part of the state than there is the Northern even tho we are all in the same state.......we are all a great part of the state no matter we live....uh goodbye

I think often times, people up north forget that there are a lot more people down south, therefore making many of the decisions. I know there are always issues about "more money given to southern Maine for road repairs etc", but hello... there is A LOT MORE TRAFFIC in southern Maine. Also, I've been told more than once, "we don't want those tourists up here" ...hello? LOL

Just let me say this. If you have any doubts about what a great State Maine is, come to Houston, Texas for about a week. You will want to head north right fast!! I've had to live here for 40 years, and I have been homesick for Maine every day of that time.

Hi, I just had to tell everyone that the class of '63 had a wonderful reunion last weekend. Even though many were among the Phish Phans in traffic we all made it to the events Friday - Sunday. It was great seeing everyone and noticing that we haven't changed a bit! Why, we don't have gray hair, or well rounded bodies, or anything like that. Ha! We missed those who were unable to come and hope we can do it again at our 45th. There's nothing like coming home to renew the core of our being.

Hi All
That is as bad as having George Dubbya as Gov. I guess their has always been Two Maines as far back as I can remember. We always knew that the seat of power and the money was down South, but it was not as apparent as it is nowadays. The BDN has a running story entitled The Two Maines.
To the doubter, yes I have been baking in the heat. It is 109.5F at 5:13pm your time (8-7-03) You had better read up on your Maine history. If I remember correctly, I have never seen a Spruce,Fir or any species of tree in Maine that grows as tall as a Pine. Also I remember reading about somewhere way back in the far reaches of far Northern Aroostook there are a few tall pines with the English broad arrow carved in them marking them as property of the British Crown. And guess what, they were used as Masts for ships. I may be in Texas but my heart and mind is still in the Garden Spot of Maine. Pax Paz Freiden Peace Arch

Hwy Arch, you would have liked our govener even less than the quarter if you had heard him and this guy named Tim Sample stand up and say "There aint no reason for anyone to go to northern maine because you wont find a Schooner or Lighthouse on the banks of the Aroostook river and the govener in which this state elected stood there and clapped and laughed about it and from what I was told pretty much agreed with it. I have lived in southern Maine for almost 15 years and if you ask anyone if they ever heard of any towns past Augusta their answer usually is: " I didnt know there was anything past Bangor but Canada"....Tsk Tsk Tsk

Hi All
Well I just my first Maine quarter and needless to say I am dissapointed. I told all my friends that it is a missprint and they are gonna recall it. (Rottsa Ruck) I have been away since 78 and have I guess forgotten all of my Maine history. Hmm is Maine known as the Tall Ship state, naa that cant be, oh yeah it is known as the Light House state. But my wife says no it is known as Vacation Land but some where back in the grey matter something tells me that Maine is known as the ??? Hmm Pine something Oh it is on the tip of my tongue. I know!!! it is the Pine Tree State, but the Pine tree on this Quarter looks like an after thought. It looks like the Coasties have had their way once again.
I will bet that not one of them made the connection with Pine Trees and the Tall Ships. If it was not for the Pine Trees there would not be Tall Ships because the would not have had masts. But I guess the person that designed it was the same person that done a mural in the State House years ago and painted the lobsters in their natural habitat. And then had to redo part cause lobsters are not really red. Nuff Said. Thanks for letting me gripe, Pax Frieden Paz Peace Arch

WHAT A GREAT TIME AT '73 CLASS REUNION! Who took all the photos? (Not me...I was too busy laughing, hugging and crying!) Let me know so that I can request copies of some...please.

Just got back to Florida Monday night. My Maine trip consisted of Old Orchard, Pine Point, Prouts Neck, Portland, Portage and Presque Isle, Patten (lots of P's) and a few points in between. The weather was lousy but I had the best time! You can take a girl out of the county but you can't take the county out of the girl!! It was great seeing all of you. The memories that it brought back were priceless! A few more were created that night. I wish it could have continued the next day. I didn't have enough time to talk and laugh with everyone I wanted to.

Anyway, I always have you all in my heart and can't wait to do it again!!

Love and soft breezes,

Me

Hi to Susan Somerville
I just visited with your dad and Audrey last weekend as I was up in Presque Isle for my 30th reunion! I hadn't been there since 1979 - so it was a real treat. It was absolutely wonderful to be home - I wish I could have stayed longer. I had a great visit with Audrey and Bob - I brought lots of pictures and Audrey loved hearing that I remembered her plaid bermuda shorts and how fashionable she always was at the golf course. We had many wonderful memories with your family. I'll email the pictures that I took of them. Gail's two kids got married this past month - I read that you have a son about to be married. I know Gail would love to hear from you. Her email address is: DPaceG@aol.com
Anyway, nice to see your name on this site. Posie and I have been in touch now and then - we found each other through this site. It's great to connect with people like this. Take care and I'll email those pictures.
Love,
Julie

My daughter is leaving Vermont tonight for the Phish concert. I lived in Presque Isle during the late 40's in the Mountain View Apartments. I wish I could come up with her (not to the concert, but to just to see Presque Isle again). Maybe I'll make it someday!

Hey Rose Ann!
Thanks for visiting your Aunt Audrey and Uncle Bob! Dad said that you still talk a mile a minute and enjoyed your visit so much! I haven't been home this year but I lived with them for 8 weeks last year when they needed my help! My son Andrew is getting married in 2 weeks and then I will be back to normal....as normal as I ever get! Still waiting for that picture!!When I was back, I visited Winnies as often as I could for the lobster......Seattle doesn't know much about lobster except that you must take out a loan to eat it here!

Anybody else I know here?!

Hi to Joanie P. who grew up in Presque Isle on Hillside and now resides in the D.C. area. Just had a fun conversation with Ann S. nee T.. She said that you take a peek at this guestbook from time to time. Last time I saw you was one cool, late fall night on the Conant Road where Ann T. and her family were living while their house was being built. D.C., eh? You just gotta miss the County and the slowwwwww traffic and pace. Heck, I still leave the keys in the car everywhere I park. Bet you don't. Ann looked good today and right full of moxie. She said to say hi....................dg

Perhaps the Gingerbread man hasnt really changed as much as you think. For him not to reveal himself only shows that he has something "to hide" and really isnt a changed person after all these years not to dare to reveal himself during the reunion for fear of feeling the same way he did all those years ago.????? (Just a thought from a reader)

To all that organized the reunion, thank you for including me in the invites. I was extremely excited to go back and see the few friends that I had made when I had moved to Presque Isle. Unfortuntely not everyone was too happy to see me there. To those of you, I'm sorry that I put a damper if any on your evenings. I had hoped that over the past twenty years, feelings would have changed. The fact that alot of you did not take the time to get to know me, or give me a chance....really bothered me back in school. But it has been twenty years, and I had hoped that those people may have softened their hearts a little. But I was wrong. For those of you that did give me a warm welcome, my husband and I truely apprecited it. Again, thank you so much for the memories.

Flying home to Maine tommorrow.... any of you who live away from Maine now might be feeling the same as I do when going HOME.... very tearful morning, thinking of home, thinking of successes and losses in life... the desire for that sense of home again.. the recreation of home in new environments and the need to still find that safe place in heart and soul that is where we are at home, whether in or out of Maine.
"Maybe there's a chance for me to go back, now that I have some direction, it would sure be nice to be back at home where there is love and affection.... And maybe I can convince time to slow up, giving me enough time in my life to grow up, time be my friend, let me start again...." lyrics from The Wiz.... Home.. by Charlie Smalls

Posie, We were out looking for a car for our 16 year old daughter, Amy, on Saturday and got to talking about us going to my class reunion in Maine. One of the salesman said he was born in Portland and when I said I was from PI, he said he lived there for 3 years from 1963 -66 and fished all the time at Mantle Lake. He described his street as going up a big hill and turning right just before a neighborhood store (Gus's) and when I said Dudley Street, he said he lived at 84 Dudley and lived next to Chuck Johnson! He thought he remembered a Jimmy Johnson, but all I remember is Chuck and Mary because Mary went to school with my brother, Jerry. I could have talked to him all day! Glad you have a safe trip. We leave this Friday and I can't wait!

I spent some time in P.I. the last 2 days of June but didn't manage to see more than 3 h.s. friends and my Aunt Audrey and Bob Somerville, Duska Glidden, and Doris and Bob Andrews. Then I had all of my relatives in Houlton. I did cruise Main St. and got to eat at the sub shop across from the pool and have another sub from Chuck's Grocery at the end of my old street-Dudley St. I do miss the area. I hope to come for a longer visit next summer. Renting a cottage on Portage Lake sounds good to me. After growing up at Portage for my whole childhood I really miss it. My kids would be bored out of their minds, though,I imagine. Hey, does anyone still operate the old Dean's Hotel at Portage Lake? Post me a note if anyone has the answer. My family kept that place in business and had a great time dancing to the local band or playing the juke boxes that were attached to the booths.

My family kept that place in business and had a great time dancing to the local band or playing the juke boxes that were attached to the booths.

Sorry about the stuck image. What happened was we got a really good thunderstorm yesterday evening(including a tornado warning--apparently there was one spotted around Mapleton) and the power to the webcam went off. That was the last image taken before the power interruption. I've restarted the camera.

Class of 73 we had a blast at the 72 reunion you think that oh wow they are old! We had fun! The only problem for us was we had no grandkids like you all had! Have fun!

What intersection is the problem? The only one I remember being a problem was the State St one. As for Maine DOT, if they're anything like NHDOT, you'll be huffing for a long time before they do much of anything. I called about an intersection here and was basically told the problem came from poor city planning and DOT wasn't going to reward ineptitude. I replied with a pithy "seemingly unless it's your own" and 5 years later they've pushed the project back another 7 years. Seems I was correct.

cj.....
Thanks for reading the letter to the editor in the Star-Herald. Yes, that intersection is very challenging especially to out-of-towners and has a high accident rate, yet, no one from DOT has responded to my letter. Either Maine DOT chooses to ignore the situation because no single person in the government can be sued for poor design and/or no one in that department has the brains to redesign the intersection. I shall keep a running score (accident numbers) for them and from time to time print out that score in the Star-Herald. Eventually someone from DOT will take notice. I just know they think that if they don't respond, I'll just quit and blow away. But.....my office is right there and will always observe at least those accidents which occur in the daytime......dg

Jeanne: just got back from PI and the weather for the past 2 weeks was great, except for a couple of days when it was HOT, HOT, with high humidity. Had a great time though; mom sends her regards, and wants you to call her when you go up! Every flight I took today was late, but it's sure nice to be back in Florida!
Dick G: you're right about that intersection and all the traffic (re: your letter to the editor in the Star Herald a few weeks ago); quite a mess out there near your office. We were on the run so I didn't have the opportunity to stop in and say hello!
Linda: Yes, you probably did see Ray and I on the web-cam. We'd pre-arranged that "viewing" with our sons and a few friends. And, yes, I was wearing a blue shirt and blue shorts, and was on the cell phone, talking to one of our sons in Florida, who was watching and telling us where to stand! That was our big excitement for 6/27!

There's just no place like home.....PI and "The County".......we had a wonderful time visiting with friends and family. And, our cooler came home full of red hot dogs, fiddleheads, Mrs. Mike's donuts and a strawberry-rhubarb pie! Yum-yum!!

The little store on Main Street was Tom's Market in the 70's. Tom was Tommy Lunney and he was a riot, always kidding around and telling jokes. Before that it was Perreaults (sp?) but that probably was in the 60's. When is the reunion for the Class of '83? My reunion, Class of '73 is July 26th and I can't wait to see everyone! Is that the same store on the road to Haystack Mountain (can't remember the name but played many a baseball game there with Hampy McPhereson and crowd....)across from the Country Kithen Warehouse next to the Propane company off Lenfest street? What was the name of the little store on Main St. that sat across from the old Sears building and Dunkin Donuts? I grew up on Howard St and my grandfather used to spend many hours at the Dunkin Donuts. Whenever my grandmother would send him for an errand, he'd "disappear" so she'd call me to go down and root him out of the donut shop. Of course, the store was just a shot across the road, and with all that penny candy calling, I'd run in. But for the life of me I can't remember what that little shop was called. Time period would've been in the early 70's. And Jim, thanks for the suggestion. Weather permitting that looks like where we'd like to go. I brought it up with Carina and she actually smiled, quite an accomplishment!

Hi Guys! I'm up in PI and haveing a nice quiet time. It is beautiful up here and I'm gonna run up to Porttage Lake. I went to old Roberts Market, but it is only a memory for me. The town is the same and also very different. I look for old friends, but it has been too long. Well, you may see me looking and waving to the web cam. I'm going to try to call my sisters and give them a wave. I was looking at houses that are up for sale and there are some nice ones and most under 50K. Man, I could buy some nice ones for what I paid for my place. I wish there was more industry/ work up here. I would love to see my kids go outside and me to know they are safe. Who ever is comming up for class reunions, have fun! I wish I could be there (left when I was 6 and only came back during the summer) I'm 38 now and this is still home. Been a while since I last posted, but things have been nutty here, as usual. First, thanks so much Dick for the pic of the neighborhood on Howard St. It got through the mail fine and I'm in the process of getting it framed. Absolutely love it, thanks!
Secondly, any ideas on where I could hold a bday party for one of my children while I'm up there? Carina's bday is on that weekend and I had thought about doing Mantle Lake, but they're having a big McCain's party there. I'm looking for something fun for the kids, but also somewhere where we adults can chat since both sides of my family will be there.
Third, really looking forward to seeing everyone! Hard to believe it's been so long since I've seen anyone from the greatest class to cross the threshold at PIHS.

Yeah, I've been meaning to take the entire scenic cam off there. I get so many emails from people asking if we still have that much snow :)

As for the downtown cam...yeah, it probably is a bit boring, but it's not as simple as finding the most exciting view in town and sticking a camera to the side of a building. You have to put the camera where you have permission and an internet connection.

Think about the kid that had to wear gum rubbers to school in the winter or the kid that only had hand me down clothes or the kid that had lice and everyone called him or her " Bugs " after that. Or the kid that marched to a little different tune. Keep thinking, you will figure it out. Peace Arch

Just one more thought about the quarter ceremony. I was there with all of our students from Bristol School. I told lots of people that on that schooner is a huge load of potatoes from Aroostook. They then mentioned that the quarter represented the coastal part of the state. I said, "We're used to that." We will still survive and send out people with the best work ethic in the state. I'm still proud of Maine, the whole state, especially Aroostook!

Hello Everyone,
Just a little note to say hello. It's been a while since I've written. School and kids have kept my way too busy. I can't wait to go up to PI this summer. It's been a looonnnggg time since I've been there! I have some great memories from up there and never hesitate to say that I am a "County Girl"! Most of the time people already know that about me, and I can't for the life of me figure out how they already know! Is it my accent? Who knows! ha ha. Maine is a wonderful state, whether you live in the southern end, northern end, western end or eastern end! One should be proud to be from Maine!!! Take care everyone!

Just a note to the person who said that Maine doesnt have big snakes. I can attest to the fact that there are Timber Rattlers in Aroostook County. I and six other people saw one at the camp ground on Fish Lake in 76 or 77. The have had them for years as far north as Conn. and they must have migrated further north. And no we were not drunk, we allowed nothing stronger that Coke or yuck Pepsi. Oh yah, it was between 4 & 5 ft long. None of us were brave enough to get very close to get a better look. Peace Arch

From:

Scott, perhaps you have forgotten when you were growing up that this has always been the PINE TREE state. No tater needed on the quarter...then that would exclude everyone else in the state in the process, kinda of like what it's doing now...."that's my point" whether you agree with it or not. And our govener standing up on a podium with Tim Sample (who is this guy anyways?) saying the only way anyone would want to go to Northern Maine is if you put a lighthouse and Schooner on the Aroostook river is not helping our economy, only the coastal economy so how you think that benifits Aroostook county is only questionable. Sorry webmaster. I will refrain from "using" this page as a discussion forum. Thanks :-)
From: visitor
Date: Tue Jun 10 16:09:19 UTC 2003
yes, it is relevant indeed. Exactly what you said is the reason why Northern Maine should be recognized as well as it's good people. A lighthouse does not represent this state and whether you are just "visiting" or live there; it is relevant to those who feel that "they" too make up part of this state and it will be "everyones" children who benifit from it in the end as long as the whole state is included, not just those who's economy has already been booming for years. Thanks for your reply. Your opinion matters. :o)
From:
Date: Tue Jun 10 15:25:03 UTC 2003
Anyone who lives in Northern Maine and P.I. knows that the economy has not grown, it may look different to the people who come back and "visit" but the fact remains that the largest export that we have is our children and then the parents of those children so that they can be closer to there family. How do we feel about being left out of the publicity of the "other" Maine and the State quarter? The same way we always feel, "Whatever" We carry on and do what we can to bolster business and try to find a reason for people to come to P.I. And yes we have snow and black flies, but we don't have "big" bugs, snakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, devestating floods, and we can still leave our car and home doors unlocked and let our greatest export run around in the park without having a leash on them. So I guess it's all relevant, isn't it.
From: Scott AJ Campbell

"Put a potato on a quarter?"...hummm The fact remains that Maine is and has always been a vacation State based upon it's beautiful winding coast line, not it's interior, that's not to say tourist don't enjoy all parts and aspects of Maine for vacations. I'm totally missing your point here. Any tourism to the State that contributes to the States financial gain benefits the entire State, including Aroostook County, that in NO WAY hurts the economy......BTW: In the last 20 years the county and PI in particular sure has grown.. funny had nothing to do with any quarter...What was your point again? ..Oh never mind here's a thought... Why not put the Solar system on the quarter in representation of the dedication next week of the "Maine Town in Center of the Solar System" on Route 1 from UMPI in PI to Houlton... geeee that should bring the tourist coming in droves. Well the Rosewell crowd anyway...

I was wondering how people in Northern Maine feel about being left out in the representation of the new "state quarter"? Tim Sample went on local news in Portland and said..(And I quote)" The only way anyone would ever go to Northern Maine is if you put a lighthouse or Schooner on every corner" This state is telling everyone in the USA that lighthouses and Schooners represent this state and in turn are willing to hurt the economic growth of Aroostook County and our Govener is ahead of the line to say so on television. Our Govener boasted on how "this will help southern Maine's economy and bring more tourists to this area than ever before because of this "beautiful" quarter. (Shame on you Baldacci!)

We will be moving to Bridgewater in a couple of months and love Bluegrass and Country music. We have jam sessions here in CT that we go to. Is there anything like that up there? We follow Roger Sprung ( 2X world champion banjo player)and would love to find someone up there to go see who also plays banjo and guitar. Regardless, we can't wait to move to beautiful Aroostook County. To us -- Almost Heaven. Thanks

To the Lamberts: glad you found our hometown site! I knew you'd enjoy checking out the Main Street web cam, and reading the Guest Book!
To Everyone Else: John Lambert is another cousin of mine; a star basketball player for St. Bonaventure U, and was a winning coach at one of Hartford, CT's inner city schools before retirement. He and his lovely wife, Carole, still live in CT, not far from where Ray and I lived for 28 years, before we moved to Florida several years ago. We did manage to see them last summer at the McHugh Family Reunion and they both looked great! Sorry we'll miss seeing them in PI in July for John's 50th class reunion.

Hi Mona, It surely was great to be home and see so many dear friends. The Parkers were such a great family and it was wonderful to see so many family members. Our Gwen was named after their Gwen, as you may know. It was really wonderful to be with some of my family again. We've always loved singing and probably our neighbors heard us singing as we drove down the Burlock Rd. in our Ford Van years ago. We used to sing everywhere we went, even to get groceries. What wonderful memories. As soon as some of this rainy weather departs maybe we won't feel so soggy. At least the warmth and black flies are here. That's a good sign the summer isn't far away! PI is still such a refreshing place to be or visit.

1970 - I've sat here before and wanted to write 10,000 words on PI. I watch the main street cam and look for anyone. And reminisce. Polly & Trish, Tina, Mike, the Bills, the free school, politics, that afterschool hamburger/coke grill, snow, swimming in icy lakes in the spring. I can see so many young women and men. But their names are long gone. Ahhh, to be 17, in high school, and back in PI. I only spent months there, but have missed it for years. A definite turning point in my life.

The secret of the 1933 time capsule will have to wait for the right moment. Sorry, but it tickles me pink to be about the only one who knows. Someday everyone will know....
Now, the hospital on Mechanic St.To my knowledge there's never been a hospital there. If you were born in the '30's, you would have gone to P.I. General on Second St.. No doubt you would have been delivered by either Boone or Graves (my grandfather).....

Dick, I don't have the foggiest! I grew up on a farm 7 miles out on the Maysville Road, well that's what it was called then. You go out the Caribou Rd. to the radio station (not WAGM) and turn right and our farm was on the left, in fact, its the only original house still standing. We got to town once a week and I had never heard of a time capsule. By the way, I was the only one in my family born in a hospital and it was on Mechanic Street. It is a large white house on the right on the corner. Mrs. Smith was in the hospital just before my mother and had Ruth and Roland, the twins. Memories.....

That time capsule thing you asked about......if you don't get an answer and are disappointed, I'll let you in on a well kept secret about another time capsule put into place in 1933. I know where it is, but probably it's scheduled to be opened in 2033. However, if no one knows about it, it won't be found until the building is razed one day. That could be years and years from now. Perhaps we could have it arranged to be opened in 2008, the 75th anniversary........dg

Is Maine next as California is Considering Internet Sales Tax?

California is the most populated state in the U.S. and has the largest
budget deficit in the country; it also could be losing more tax revenue
generated from online sales than any other state. Add these factors together
and it%92s no wonder California is taking steps toward legislation that
would impose a state sales tax on goods purchased on the Internet from
out-of-state vendors.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1992 that it is unconstitutional for states
to force businesses to collect sales tax unless a company has a physical
presence (warehouse, office or retail store) in that state; however,
Congress has the power to change that policy.

The California Legislature recently approved two bills focused on collecting
online sales tax for purchases from companies that don%92t have a location
in California, so it%92s up to Governor Gray Davis to make the call.

One bill would require California to join forces with 35 other states and
the District of Columbia, a group that is working to create a standard to
collect state sales tax on line and mail order purchases. The group is
called the streamlined Sales Tax Project, and it hopes to convince Congress
to change the current law. California is involved with the group but only as
an %93observer state.%94

Lillie and I were good friends in high school. I also remember Leslie very well. I think you were the little one with long blonde hair (Like Lillie's).
I saw her in New York about 20 years ago! One of my sisters worked in Babe's showroom on 7th Avenue after Lillie had worked there. We were all close with Verna Hedrich - took art lessons from Verna with Lillie. Also knew your brother Mike and I remember your parents well. When you talk to Lillie, say hello for me. Hi everyone from the class of '83! I'm glad I took a moment to look through the posts. I saw quite a few familiar names. Looking forward to seeing everyone in July. Does anyone happen to know of a camp or cabin that may be for rent that week before the reunion? Susan Short and I want to come up the week before and hang out. I'm not having much luck finding anything in the Star Herald. Would appreciate any info. Susan

LCD and Zoo Crew....
Many thanks for the my "many happy returns". It is, in fact, my 61st b'day, something only part of the Zoo Crew has witnessed (name starts with "M"). And speaking of my 61st, few of us were born on the exact day of some famous person, but on this day, April 26, 1942, Bobby Rydell was also born. Remember him...songs like "Wild One" and "Volare", both 1960. He's still around performing and isn't bad at all after 61 years on the planet.
As it has been on my b'day for several years, I shall do my 10 mile run out Mapletom way. My oldest boy, Rick, usually follows me in his car, but this year all 3 of my boys will accompany me (in a car, of course). After the run which normally takes 1 3/4 hours, we'll stop at a small C store in Mapleton and eat hot dogs and other crap like chips, soda pop....things I deny myself all year round. All this despite a very frosty morning (32 degrees). Weather promises to heat up to a high of 52.....just right for running. Again, thanks for my b'day greeting...very thoughtful and appreciated...........RAG

Waldo L.....
Regarding the rural school history in the P.I. district: Molly Parks Andrews was selected (and volunteered) to do the history of S.A.D. #1. That history only goes back to 1957, so she decided to include all of the school history of P.I. Since she and I are schoolmates (PIHS '60) and since, too, she knew I enjoy P.I. history, she asked me if I'd join her in gathering the data. Of course, I said yes and chose to do the rural school history starting at the turn of the century. At present I'm locating the sites of all 23 rural schools which were listed in a 1902 Annual Report. So far I've located perhaps 1/2 of the 23 including the Merritt School which you attended. It's for certain that this history will be available to the public one day.
cj.......thanks for reading the articles in the Star-Herald. By the way, your mother and I are attending the same seminar at the college. The subject matter is the history of local railroading. Judy Burleigh and I are revealing all we know (and what we don't know) about that history. Her great-grandfather was the inspiration of the B&A RR coming to P.I. in 1894.........

This one's to Dick Graves, but anyone else can chime in, if you like.
I was just reading through the archived guest book entries and was following a discussion between Carolyn (Craig) Calderelli (-Sorry if I misspelled your name, Carolyn!) about rural schools. You mentioned someone in your class ('60) who is working on a history of those schools. Is that something that will be published eventually? Will it be available for purchase by those of us who might be interested in such things? I attended the Merritt School, which was at the intersection of Fort Road and Burlock Road.
Your discussion brings back many memories, even though the school has been closed since 1949.
We also had only one teacher, teaching sub-primary through eighth grade. Many of the "big kids" helped us little ones with our lessons, and I'm sure that decreased her workload. -But we thought of it as just the normal thing to do.
-Sure am enjoying the site! Thanks to all of you who contribute.

Your right Jeff, Spring is near. And I surely do miss Northern Maine! Leaving something you love is always bitter sweet....be it a place or a woman, But I must say, I woke up this morning and stepped out on my back porch to see the most wonderful mist floating around the top of Mount Monadnock. Sorry to say, the only thing I saw flying was a pair of Blue Jays, Which confirms your affirmation of spring! Recently I was inspired by a posting here which lead to an epiphany.... and the only sound I heard...was "The Speed of Trees" ....Hey question for you old man... How's the throwing arm and where's a good place to go kayaking on say about the midst plus of July?

Good morning folks! Sunday-April12,2003
The sun is up early, the sky bright blue and a black fly not to be found. The birds are whistling patiently waiting for a worm to wiggle its way up through the the frozen ground. I think its safe to say that spring is finally here? We still have a few feet of snow on the ground and snow banks four feet or better on some back roads. The White- tail deer are starting to show themselves in the back fields the small black and white critters slowly walking around leaving there sweet aroma in the crisp air.How about the common house fly buzzing between the window screens and against the side of the house. yup, spring is near. I hope this short note makes you miss northern Maine Its to bad you had to leave! Take care.........

Renee, had you not mentioned that Ellis Paul was the "Paul" Plissey, I would never have known. Interestingly enough I had the wonderful opportunity to listen to "Sweet Mistakes" ( an MP3 download that can be found at the following url < http://www.mp3.com/ellispaul > recently and have made plans to see him tonight (April 10th) at the Four Corners Grill in New London NH. Now I have double treat to look forward to! To all readers take a moment to learn more about a Presque Isle native and Class of "83" grad at < http://www.ellispaul.com >

Hello Class of '83 friends. I'm still checking into this site from time to time. I've just been too busy to write anything. I'm hoping to go see Ellis Paul (known to most of us as Paul Plissey) this Saturday in Brewer. He is a singer now and and has some CDs out. I hope that I will get to talk to him and let him know about our class reunion as his name is on the missing classmates list. I'll keep you all posted! Hang in there everyone, it will get warmer! I hope!

Leaving in two weeks for Fla which isn't soon enough. I have a feeling we are going to jump right into summer since we haven't seen spring other then maybe two days of it in March. Responding to your last crownofmaine e-mail: Winter continues to hold us hostage with its relentless cold weather. We're missing part of our spring which is short enough in good times. Haven't even seen a robin yet. I always expect that by my b'day (April 26), that there's no snow, but this year there will be. We probably have 15-20 inches snow on the ground. I believe more is on the way and no relief from the cold is expected. But, just like the pain of childbirth, when it's over, it's over and forgotten...........

Monday noon, April 7th, and we are having a real snowstorm here in Manhattan! In Maine, I can understand it but here it's a little crazy! Spring will be here sometime soon, won't it?
Even though our kids loved the blizzard we had this winter, even they aren't that excited about this snow! They want to wear shorts and go to the outdoor courts and shoot hoops!

Nancy,
I just typed you a long winded (Julie can tell you that they are long winded) e-mail using the address that came up by clicking on your name in the guest book and it came back to me as undeliverable. The address I use here is my home address, but you can reach me at work at www.tolleyj@codb.us If you send me you address, I'll re-send my note.
We called Kara and Andy Marino in Houlton last night as we were sitting on the deck at a local restaurant, in 83 degree weather overlooking the river. Andy said he could not see across the lake because it was snowing so hard. Hard to believe there's that much of a difference. The P.I. web cam doesn't look like there's that much new snow and I can't get the Houlton web cam to come up.
Have a great week everyone!

I saw your mention of my daughter's name in the Guest Book. Look in Julie's message that I just sent for info about Debbie. She remembers you and said that you and Julie were very nice friends. It made my day to have heard from Presque Isle people. Once you have lived in PI a little of you stays there after you leave.

I e-mailed my daughter, Debbie, and she was very pleased to be remembered by Presque Isle friends and she e-mailed back that Merle Smith really was a very good teacher and she still has the notebooks about world landmarks she did in his class. She feels that project was her early interest in Art History.

Debbie De Porter Hoover has 3 children--a daughter age 16 and two sons ages 14 and 10. Debbie is a Grants Administrator for a Foundation. They presently live in Hudson, Ohio and have also lived in Chicago, NH, Washington,DC and 4 years in Ballarat, Australia which they loved and hated to leave. We made two trips down by ship and had great times.

We live in New London, New Hampshire.

We have moved around-- PI to Manchester, NH. then to Stratham, NH. and presently we are in New London, NH. Since yesterday we have had over a foot of snow! The PI Main St. Web Cam shows no recent snow up there. We had a lot of bare ground until this storm.

Hi Posie, Glad to hear that you have taken advantage of PanAm but missing your flight sounds like something I'd do. Especially when I get talking! My brother, Jerry, travels up your way once or twice a year. His in-laws live in Springfield, VA and I think he flies into Dulles too. My cousin, Marilla Giberson, from Caribou also lives in that area. She and her husband were both in the army and worked at the Pentagon. They are out of the army, but I think they are still working there as civilians.
I'd also like to know about Debbie DePorter. She and I were quite good friends too and I remember being so upset when she moved away. We wrote letters for awhile but lost touch along the way.
Have a great weekend everyone.

Thanks,Jeanne, for the flight info. BWI is 2 hrs. away but we often fly out of there because it is cheaper. Dulles is our closest- only 25 minutes away. I do plan to check the rates. The last time I flew into there, however, I spent too much time visiting my niece and I missed the flight! My husband and my niece's husband were both on the cell phone with me trying to reschedule me. I finally ended up switching airports-from Manchester to Boston- and spen the nite sleeping on those uncomfortable seats since I had to take a 6am flight. Not fun! I have had to reassure my husband that I won't do that again!!!

Is your daughter by any chance Debbie? If so, we were in the 7th grade rogether at Cunningham. She was so beautiful. I know she moved away, I think to New Hampshire, around that time. I was in the 7th grade in 1968.
She came to our house on Dyer St a number of times, I'm sure. We had Merle Smith for Social Studies as I remember one day in particular that he was getting on her case! If that's your daughter, give her my regards.

For you would-be travelers to Maine: Coming from the west, -Oregon, we've regularly been able to save lots of $$$ by booking our flights to Manchester, NH and then renting a car. Round-trip prices are sometimes 60% of what they would be into BOS or PWM. Of course, our ultimate destination is usually Waterville, rather than PQI. That's where the grandkids we're required to spoil are located.
-Hope you all survived April Fool's day nicely.

Also wanted to let everyone know that if you are near a city served by PanAm, they have great flights. Posie, they were flying into BWI, but I don't know how far that is from you. They go into Bangor or Portsmouth, NH and the flights are less than Delta. The planes are all one class with big roomy seats and lots of leg room. We Mainers here in Florida have become very spoiled using them. Kara and Andy Marino fly it every month or so when they come down. Total flight time from Bangor to Sanford, Fl. is only 4 hours with one stop, no plane changes so it is great. Hope to see as many people as possible when we are 'home' for my 30th (UGH) reunion on July 26th. Carol Bell has arranged for a tour of the high school on the 25th and has invited teachers we had so maybe Carroll Parker will be there.

O.k. so we got about an inch of snow last Sat. It rained later in the day so it has melted. It will hit the 70's in a couple days and then another cold front. Welcome to a Va. spring!!!
Nice to hear that Mr. Parker is still alive. He played at my wedding,at my house, in June 1973, and stayed on to play for guests until who knows when! Everyone called us on the phone that nite and talked to us. That's my Mom! It sounded like it was a great party!!!
Another suggestion, if anyone is having problems getting to Maine. I have flown into Nashua,N.H. and rented a car. The rates were really good. You will have the drive but you can enjoy the Maine roads. If you are from a large metropolitan area it is a refreshing change. And,if you are like me, you can tour the relatives on the way up or down the state.

For anybody traveling to Presque Isle if you are "of age" or married to someone who is on the other side of that hill, check out

http://www.aarp.org/

for cheap flights. They are affiliated with USAir who flies to Presque Isle.
I got my $425. flight from New York to PI for $250.
If you're not an Aarp member it only costs $12.50 to join and the spouse automatically becomes a member even if you're under 50.

Go to the website, click on travel, then on airlines, then USAir. You have to call to make the reservation, you can't do it online. But it's a different phone number than just calling USAir.
If you are flying, it's definitely worth checking out.
Always good to save a little money!

The person who does the registrations and knows the prices is out of town until Friday. I'll get that information for you. They will have bedding, towels, etc. so the guests don't have to pack those sort of items. I think that we'll have plenty of places to stay but I'd suggest making arrangements as soon as possible. The post card that my brother, Marc is looking for is, like he said, a picture of J. J. Newberry's. The kids in front of it are probably not very visible right away because we were just walking by the store as the picture was taken and in the picture, we are all in one strait row, side by side. But you can see, in the picture that there is a small brown-haired boy, a taller dark-redheaded girl and a taller light-redheaded girl, most definately us. So what anyone looking for this post card would really be looking for, is one depicting the Newberry's store. I too would just love to see it. We had bought several back in the day, when we discovered that we were actually part of a post card. But as time passed and we moved away from home, none of us realized we should have hung on to our moment of fame.

In my P.I. old photo collection I found the postcard to which you had referred. It was taken by Voscar in the late '50's or early '60's. It was, in fact, taken directly in front of Newberry's and shows not only a woman (Mrs. Silas Jordan...I know her), but right behind her a 10 year (perhaps) boy and someone else. The boy is wearing a plaid jacket, but it's difficult to view the details because he's partially hidden by the woman. I've made you a copy. I need your mailing address........dg

Deb,
It was Alec Silver. He and his wife were good friends of my parents. And their daughter, Debby, was also in the class of 1960.

Dick,
an email copy would be fine! Just click on my name and my email addy is there. Yes my Mom did graduate in 1960, she was at the last reunion. The family name is McCluskey and it was Mac that originally owned the garage, now his son, my uncle does. Story goes that my grandfather was a Mechanic in WW2 so they nicknamed him Mac and it stuck. I'd also heard he got the nickname from his early days of working for Silver as a mechanic, remember the man who had the car dealership? Can't remember his first name. Personally, I think it was just a nickname from McCluskey, but it adds some color. Also, did you ever hear of a boarding house in the early 40's? Thanks for the pic in advance!

Does anyone know if Carroll Parker still lives in the area or have any update on him? He was the senior English teacher in '73 and for a number of years before that because my sister Gail had him in '67. He was a good friend of the family - we used to go to his house when I was a kid and go ski-dooing. He was a wonderful pianist and his dad could really play the fiddle!

You ask me about photos of Howard St. Yes, I have a wonderful aerial of Howard. I've sent exerpts of it to Norma Pelletier, because we've known each other since the dawn of man. If you'd like to see the photo, send me your e-mail and I'll attach the photo to an e-mail. If you can't live without a copy of it, I'll make you a hard copy of it and send it via snail mail. Madaline McCloskey was in my class of '60'. I have no photos of Matt McCloskey's garage on the Houlton Road.....sorry.

I have a copy of the '73 SHIP; you're welcome to borrow it. If so, give me your mailng address. The reason I have so many year books is because I bought Dorothy Dingwall's collection which contained many '60's and'70's editions. I also have Avis Lamoreau's collection which contain those from the '40's and '50's. Also a collection from an unknown source containing '20's and 30's. I use these year books frequently when doing P.I. history. Okay, if you want to borrow the book, just ask.....dg

Dick, Hey, if you see Vic Brown, tell him we'd like to see him at the reunion Aug. 1-3. We've missed him other years. If nobody has dibs on your'63 PIHS yearbook, I'd like to claim it. If anyoone has any extra '61, '62'or '64 yearbooks that they'd like to pass on I'd love to have copies. We've talked a little about having a reunion for multiple years. We were a close bunch back then. If you run across a photo taken in downtown PI back in the 50's I'd like to get a copy. It shows a couple of boys, my brothers, wearing green plaid Pendleton jackets in front of Newberry's store. It was made into a postcard but I don't ever remember having a copy of it. My mother used to make Pendleton jackets in her Libby's Mill Remnants business. That brings back memories.

Do you have any old photos of Howard St? My Mother was raised there and I grew up there as well. I'd love to see how the neighborhood changed over the years. Also, do have any old photos of McCluskey's? The trailer business on the Houlton Rd. That's my family's business and the old building was torn down a few years back. It would be great to see it again.

Forgot to tell you in the e-mail I just sent that I have a good collection of year books. So happens that collection includes the '63 edition. You mentioned Meredith Libby, so I checked her out and everyone else with whom you graduated. MIffie Dow, Vic Brown, Jimmy Dyer are guys I see often around town....good buddies. It so happens that Donna Staples Umphrey is a slightly removed neighbor (one street down) and just recently the two of us have landed on the same library committee (9 of us) to determine whether or not a new addition to the library will be built. Do you have a copy of your own year book? Sounds funny to ask, but many don't. If not, you're welcome to have my '63 copy.....dg

Nope, didn't miss my calling. It's my passion to do P.I. history. Even have a monthly column in the Star-Herald; it's all about that history. Have a huge collection of old P.I.photos from the late 1890's up thru to present. A very pleasant surprise to hear from you....it's been around 15 years hasn't it? If you've got a request for a specific P.I. old photo, I'll have it posted on crownofmaine. Just ask; your wish is my command....dg

We would like to take the kids down there sometime to see a Bruins, Celtics , or Red Sox game sometime. The Amtrak is perfect for us as we don't like to drive in Boston! haha. Hang in there everyone,,,, Spring is here! It is raining here in the Bangor area and the snow is melting....finally!!!!!! Happy Spring!!!!

The "Big Dig", yes, well try living it everyday. I sold my car shortly after moving to Boston. The high expense of insurance in Boston and the even bigger frustration of finding a parking space made it impossible. But, I love the city, I live just blocks from Copley Square. I walk to work each day on Newbury St. Really don't miss driving. I think we continue to be years away from the "Big Digs" completion, but believe it or not Renee they have made enormous progression. I can get to the airport in 8 minutes which use to take 30 minutes a year ago. So sorry I missed seeing you in your recent trip to Boston. Also saw Risa at Christmas, she does look incredible.

Renee,
"big dig done"? You mean to say they plan on finishing it??? I live less than an hour from Boston and I only travel there if I'm in the mood for a good headache and a days worth of aggravation. I know the old joke "you can't get there from here" was meant for Maine, but that was before the "Big Dig".

Just catching up on the entries of the site, and have a comment regarding "class reunion site". I have to say that I totally enjoy any info posted here, and especially reunion information, because my class does not post class reunion info on the web. Not sure why, but even in the classmate sites, class of 1976 is never listed. So, personally, I enjoy any info here, beit reunion info, family info, etc. etc. I'm in southern Maine, so not that far from "home" but still love hearing what is going on there.

As for Julie Moskowitz's comment re: "the twins", she recently sent me photos, and they look even younger than they did in high school!!!!! And their children are beautiful as well!

Some of you have inquired about the history of the Aroostook State Park at Echo Lake. The idea was first conceived in 1938. Efforts were made to secure money for the project by the P.I. Merchant's Association. Between the state government and the citizens of P.I., enough was raised to begin the project. The whole Quoggy Jo Mountain had been once owned by Elbridge Sprague, no doubt, the father of Merle. It was 100 acres. The park officially opened in 1939. Not only ski trails and jumps were available, but also a toboggan slide, walking trails and picnic and swimming areas. Red Delano was the first official park ranger back in the early '50's. Bill Cleaves (Robin Doody's uncle) was ranger in the last many years.

Aroostook SP was a "conservation grant" from several residents in the late 30's. It started with about 100 acres and over the years has grown. I think one of the original landowners were the Spragues, but there were several landowners involved in the initial donation to the state. There's probably something more at UMPI. I just know what I've heard through the years.

I am no computer wizard, but how about this for an idea regarding class reunions... what if someone created a website that you could post and interact with just like Classmates.com, signing onto it would require a donation, and the money raised could go toward technology- computer education at Presque Isle High School? Some computer savvy high school kids could create and maintain the website, we'd give money to join, and the $$ would go back to the old alma mater.... and people would nt have to give $$ to classmates.com to keep in touch.. it would even be possibly a tax-deductible donation, and a great way to keep in touch and give a little back to home.. I like hearing from people I haven't seen in decades... fond memories, and glad to have heard from those who have taken the time to write..

O.k. so we are seeing some 60 degree days intermingled with the 30's and 40's in the D.C. area. We may have another snowstorm next week; my two snow shovels are still on the porch. The last storm I had to borrow a neighbor's shovel because the 18 inches and blocked me from getting my shovel out of the toolshed attached to my yard. My tulips and daffodils have their little green stems showing so spring will come!

I'm noticing that several of "us" are now teachers. That's great. I'm enjoying teaching here in the big city. Don't think I'd get a job in PI as there don't seem to be too many openings...our district alone has 32 schools...and the district I actually live in has that many and building more. More opportunity in the larger cities, though I'd love to have taught at Gouldville. I see now it's a daycare or something. I also had Mrs. Bouchard in 3rd grade and remember her telling those ghost stories from books and haunted cemeteries...and selling us maple sugar in birch bark wrapped cones! In response to one of the entries, that girl's name was Allyn Hoyt, I believe, Lynn for short....Family lived on Federal St.

A few of you have wondered about the area of P.I. called Maysville. Before 1883 Maysville was the area from Blake St. to 6 miles north towards Caribou. In 1883 P.I. and Maysville merged and P.I. became a double twonship (6 miles by 12 miles). Maysville had from the early years 4 rural schools which were closed in the late '40's, but had no stores. The schools were Maysville, Hayford, Reach and Pomroy. The only existing building is the Maysville building. Since it was first built in 1865 (right after the Civil War), it burned twice. The building which now stands at the corner of the Caribou Road and the Parkhurst Road was constructed in 1939.....

You guys have really brought back some old memories. I still have my landmark notebook from Mr.Nelson's class. I really liked that guy. He made social studies fun. I also liked Ms. Bouchard from Gouldville. My favorite teacher of all my years in public school was Mr. Kenison. He inspired me to do what I am doing today. He passed away in September, bless his soul. What a great person he was!!!

Third Grade Mrs Bouchard I remember those years well.... funny how I spent all those years "under the radar" growing up in PI. Actually Jim, my Grandmother's maiden name was Bull, and my Mom tells me that Missy and I are cousins..... small world.

Jim...father to father... "Our Daughters will choose who they wish, all we can hope is that one day, far off into the future, :-) that they find someone who loves and respects them for who they are".... As for the hear and now, just have faith Jim...I also find that 3 bags of ready cement on the front porch raise's a few eyebrows

George Helfrich, I think what you're putting together for local kids is great. You mentioned that your parents still come up north in the summer. Where are they the rest of the time? I told my mom I saw your entry on the site and she asked for your parents. I remember that your sister Heather was in the twins' class. Where is she these days?
Also, Dick Graves, did you get up to Liesure Village to see Audrey and Bob? I want to go see them this summer. It's hard to believe that Bob is 90, but then again, my dad would have been 80 this year. I remember them all around 60!

Posie, Terry's parents are John and Beth. Beth passed away last year as I remember Mom telling me and I know she had written to John. Then Terry recognized the Moskowitz name on this site and emailed me. From his email -"Yes, there are four Tiernan boys. John (the oldest), me, Bill, and Bob.

John's in Portland, I'm in Charleston, Bill's in Colorado, and Bob's in
Exeter. Dad sold the house in Florida and moved to Colorado so he could ski
in the winter and fish in the summer."
Bill was in my class and brother Bob was a year or two behind.
Also, I was talking to my mom the other night and she mentioned that Audrey and Bob are living in a community called Liesureville right on the edge of town. Will I just be able to go see them when I'm up there or do I need to make any arrangements first? Thanks.

Hi, it's been a while since I have been on this site. We have AOL and it's getting worse daily-too much spam and hard to get on this site. I'm in the D.C. area and SO tired of snow. We have had about 24 inches within the last 2 weeks and I shoveled for about 10 days straight; it was part of my daily routine. We are finally getting rain and I have been able to see grass for the last 4-5 days. You could still slide on a toboggan on one side of my yard. I can finally see my deck again!
My daughter is home from William and Mary for her spring break. We go shopping today- there go my finances! My son has his break next week and was home last weekend. He won't break my pocketbook. He,unlike my daughter, has a job! He graduates from Virginia Commonwealth Univ. this summer-halleuiah, I will have a bit of money left at the end of the month(but my daughter is trying to make plans to spend it!) When do I see the days of my dream house on a lake and with the boat on the shore? People say there is life after college kids- I hope I have the money to enjoy it! I may be back living on Portage lake in someone's woodshed. Are there any available or are they as expensive as realty here in the D.C. area?!
I'll see the county the last week of June. My brother Mike's son,Ryan, gets married the last Sat. of June and then I plan to come to P.I. for a couple days before or after the wedding. I am looking forward to it. Even though I have short time memory lapses I remember how to get to Main St. and a lot of old family friends and personal friends are still in P.I.
Take care!

Wow, Those snowbanks between Houlton and PI are HUGE! I felt like I was driving in a tunnel yesterday as I headed north for a '63 class reunion meeting. In some places the banks are very close to the lower power lines. I understand that on the Easton Rd. that the snow is just inches away from the lines. It was in the 30's yesterday and there were signs of snow melting. I just wanted the people who live in warmer climates to know that we might have spring after all. Of course we're supposed to go back into the deep freeze again this week. Oh the Joys of Maine! I hope people don't think that all teachers are saying shameful things to students about the military life. I have a feeling that there was one or possibly 2 teachers that did this. The rest of us have more brains than that. This is such a scary time for everyone with budget cuts, pending war, possible loss of jobs, etc. WE all need to be supporting each other. That's what's happening in nearly all the schools in Maine. Haul out the woolies fellow Mainers!

Isnt that a harsh statement to make Mr. Hafford on the assumption of something you read in a newspaper? I gather from what the papers have said is that they are "simply asking" the schools to be "more aware" of it if behavioral problems arise or depression because of the loved one being gone. The realization of what might be the beginning of another war isnt something to scoff at nor are the majority of the people in Maine saying that what the military does for us isnt important. If one teacher has surpressed some sort of attitude toward a child then the teacher should be reprimanded for it but please dont attack the entire state of Maine because of someone elses opinions or views in a newspaper. Thanks

Please don't think that everyone in the state is like that. You always have liberals trying to push the veiw's on others. I just hope that it's not wide spread. We don't need people who are kids look up to and we tell to listen to in class doing this I for one support this country and the freedoms we have but what treacher do today affect the furture. If what is being reported is true it must stop.

I just read about teachers in Maine harassing students whose parents are in the military. I served 21 years in the military in support of this country and always was proud to say I was from The Great State of Maine. But, if this is the way they are going to treat kids whose parent's are in the military supporting our country, then I want no part of that state. The way I see it, these teachers are supporting Suddam and Terrorist. All you people up there should protest against the schools that are allowing this to happen. I hope all the parents SUE the school system. As for me, I support anyone that puts on the uniform that supports and protects our nation. Has everyone up there forgot about Sept 11th.

I just read the online obituary of the woamn who founded Winnie's Dairy Bar. I remember how special it was to go for a warm summer night cone or the best onion rings in the world.. I have not had ANY onion rings like that anywhere. The best lobster stew in the State of Maine.. and from Land-locked lobsters too!

I did a Google search on Nannabelle Carter, and came up with a couple of relevant hits. I found that she was in the Colby Class of 1940, which would make her about 84 or 85.

She lives in Machias.

Well, the things you can find on the web. Looking at the Main St. camera reminds me why I live in northwest Florida. Snow & cold weather.

Graduated from PIHS in 1968 & left that year to join the Navy (it was better than being a ground pounder in Vietnam). Presque Isle was a great place to grow up in. Still miss the town, except for the weather.

hi I saw that someone remembers some of the older teachers. Mrs Carter must be up there in age because I'm sure not getting any younger and it's been 32yrs since I graduated HS so what's that tell you? Ran into Mr. Winston a year or so ago. He's in the realestate business in case no one knew. Told me about a great piece of property. right in a great neighborhood. Right across the road from a graveyard. think he was trying to tell me something?

I can't believe how cold it is up there! We've had a bit of rain, thankfully, but wonderful weather to clear up the streets. You don't even want to hear that it's in the 70s in sunny AZ! Mother doesn't miss the snow when I tease her about moving back to PI!! By the looks of the weather up that way you may be in for a bit more white stuff! Stay warm!

I graduated from PIHS in 1971. I've been reading some of the posts. I havn't reconized anyone I went to school with. I have relatives in PI and a few friends. Surprised they havn't discovered this website.Guess I'll have to let them know. Better watch my english maybe Mr Winston might see this. Who knows? Anyone ever hear from Mrs Carter? She was one of the best teachers I has and of course Mr Lyford was great and Mr Winston too. Those are the ones who made the greatest impressions on me.

I was reading some of the entries and I remember Jim Lyford. I also took drivers ed through his class at PIHS. He was a very nice person. I remember the coffee stops at his house and the threats of flunking his class if he spilled his coffee. He made me so nervous that time I ran over one of his small shrubs so he never went home for coffee again when I was driving. I guess those shrubs must have been expensive. You think? I also had him for psychology/socialogy class.

-05 degrees!! That is mighty cold! But I would still trade the cold, snowy winters in Aroostook County for the Hot Humid summers here in Houston. At least you can dress warm enough, but if we were to undress enough to be cool, we would all be burned to a crisp and then we would be arrested!

And I also agree about the alcohol thing..I recently excluded a close friend in my life whom Ive known 35 years due to comments and things done while drinking...I just hope it's worth it to them...keep in touch Julie and give me a ring...We should be coming up home next month for a weekend would be nice to see you. :o)

I think the problem is in-attention with over half the accidents. Not being aware whats ahead and not asking the right questions before going out on the trails. And then you have the ones that think that drinking and driving is only concidered for those in cars.....either way it shows exactly how ignorent some people are and only think in terms of themselves. These are the same idiots that are "role models" for their children...scary thought

Bill, there have been others that get double entries also. Not exactly sure why. It may have something to do with your ISP. Ie, caching mechanisms. I manually delete duplicates when I see them so don't worry about it.

As for the scenic cam question, it is currently down due to lack of support. I'll try to update the picture sometime this weekend though.

Very funny, Bill! Actually Carol Bell said there is a gym at Keddy's but when I looked up the site for the hotel it just showed an indoor pool. There's got to be a place for those of us who are continuing the struggle against gravity and who are addicted to that daily rush of adrenaline - I'll hit the lounge after that! For one drink that I can tolerate! One and a half at the most!

I remember the snow being trucked to the PI stream and the big snowblower making a HUGE mountain. We would take our sleds d down the mountain and slide out on the PI stream. We go sliding now at Mt. Hood. You can rent a saucer or tube and use a ski area hill or go find your own hill.

Readers...
Yes, years ago the city would wisk the snow away and pile it down by the river. Perhaps 15 or 20 years ago the EPA decided the salt contained within the snow was detrimental to the quality of water, so the city now piles it at the end of west State St. just as one enters to go onto the old P.I. Air Base. I certainly must admit that the city of Presque Isle does a wonderful job of removing snow; it's done well and quickly.......

Yes it is great to talk about the weather regardless where you live. I live in an area where it rains a lot in the winter. What I like about the rain it is easy to shovel, unless it causes flooding like we experience last week. Shoveling mud is tougher than snow. I am not in a flood plain.
