Dick, I doubt that Laurie would know but Don Keirstead knows about it. He was in the Maysville School when I was in the Hayford School. And indeed I can send you a copy of the Hayford picture but I will have to find it first, then I will scan it and send to an e-mail address that you give me. I moved here to Kentucky in April and the pictures are all in boxes but I could find it, I'm sure.I sure am glad that you are working on the country schools. Its almost a lost memory now, but I know kids would love to hear about the way we "country kids" went to school. We had about 50 in our school and one teacher (who usually boarded at our house) took care of them all. I sure don't remember any discipline problems!! So many memories.....

I know what to do: I'll call Lauri (Lamoreau) Kierstead who lives just up the Caribou Road from the Parkhurst Road. Perhaps she or her husband can show me exactly where the school house was. I'd give my eye teeth for a copy of that Hayford School photo. Can we arrange it?

Dick, Judy Burleigh and I were in the class of '52,not '51. And, you will not find a clue of the school now as its just a field but the Keirstead's house is still across the road and there used to be a store that sold gas directly across the road from the school, and a little house next to it. Reginald Brown from Caribou and his sister Joyce lived there at one time. Boy, the memories start to come back when you get talking about "old times"! I have a picture of the school house that Olen Grendell gave me before he passed away. Feels good talking about this.

Thanks for your response on Hayford School. Molly (Parks) Andrews (class of'60 as I am) is doing a history of the P.I. school system. Since we're classmates and and I do much P.I. history myself, Molly has asked me to scout around for information concerning the 20 or so rural schools which existed in the P.I. area before they were discontinued back in the '40's. Now I just gotta know exactly where that school was. I'll go looking on your directions, but probably will find nothing.
You were class of '51; I'm looking at a '51 year book right now. Judy Burleigh lives just 2 stones' (maybe 4) throw from me. From time to time I come in contact with many of your old. classmates. Do you remember the school house on the corner of the Parkhurst Road and the Reach Road down by the river?

Dick, the Maysville grange WAS the Reach Road school. The Hayford school was further up the road towards Caribou, close to the radio station. I lived down that cross road by the station and Kilpatrick's lived where the road comes on the Caribou road. Then the next farmhouse towards PI was Keirstead's and the school was right across the road.

I've only heard of the Hayford School. I'd like to know exactly where it was in relation to Maysville School, now Maysville Grange 153. Maysville Grange building is right on the corner of the Caribou Road and Parkhurst Road. It's closed now and dilapidated.

Just wondered if anyone remembers the Hayford school (not the Reach Rd school that is still there) on the Caribou road across the road from Earl Keirstead's. I went there from 1939 til 1948. It burned in 1948. Happy New Year everyone!!

Yes, Dr. Donahue was a GREAT dr! And I remember when I had to go to his office, the walk seemed so long from Main Street, down back and up the little hill (below Wilder's Jewelry Store). I also remember him making house calls! As a kid, I was a bit afraid of the "black bag" and his voice was rather deep (lol)... but he was awesome!

I'm a little confused about your father's office on Main St. You said it was below the Drug Store by the Braden Theatre. Would you be a bit more specific. Apparently I never knew where his office was. I'm a bit embarrassed.....

My Dad was Dr. Gerald Donahue and was a family practitioner/pediatrician dr. for about 30 years in P.I. He died in 1972 and practiced up until 2 days before he died . His office was below the Drugstore on Main St-near old Braden movie theatre. I graduated in 1970 from PIHS and lived there all my life on Dudley St.- 2 minute walk away from Gus's/Gus's daugther's corner store.
Happy New Years! Got back from Hampton,Ga. Enjoyed it but it was a hoot with 3 dogs,1 cat, and the rest of the family- can't mention all of their quirks; I am sure they'd say the same about me!

Hi Tenlee,

We got 20" in Damariscotta. These past couple of days have been gorgeous with our "Aroostook sky". Usually the sky on the coast is much grayer than the deep blue of Aroostook. It's nice to have this yucky brown grass covered for once. It's nice to hear from you. I hope you had a wonderful holiday season, well, I guess it's not over yet. I'm heading to PI this weekend. I'll try waving at the camera. I've got to check out the Burlock Rd. I know it will be pretty out there, hoping to snowshoe up on our hill.

Hi Carolyn and Mona, I hope you had a great Christmas. We are finally getting some real snow down here on the Maine coast. So far it's been like the Aroostook thick frost. :-) It's so much fun to see good friends on this site. Mona, Gwen is so busy with her new business that she hardly gets a chance to check her emails. So if she's not answering it's not that she's trying to ignore people. She's into flowers clear to her ears. She now delivers to most of the florists in Maine. Mum would be so proud of her. Happy New Year! Meredith

Well, we are flying out in about 8 hrs. It is 2:45 a.m. and I am wide awake. Will sleep on plane! Merry Christmas to all! D.C. may have a dusting of snow but they say people can still drive- that's questionable since most people drive terribly even without snow! This holiday season I have been almost hit several times trying to walk in the mini malls near my house and then a young dude flicked me off when he wanted the right of way. I must admit I honked my horn at him afterwards!Where is the holiday spirit? We all seem to busy to enjoy the season. I plan to kick back some when I arrive in Atlanta to a house with 2 dogs,l cat, goldfish and a Dad that screams periodically at a high functioning 6th grade autistic child. All of us will be there so it will still be enjoyable! Will be back Fri. late so will be here to veg out for New Years. I get drunk on one wine cooler!

Yes Arch, after my mother died in 1993 at the age of 96, my brother said to my sister and me, "well, we are the old timers now!" Now he passed away in 2001 and how much I know that we are the "old timers"! But like you said, its a state of mind and we have to keep busy and ignore the signs of old age! I had an Aunt that once said, people used to get old and die, now they get old and linger....Well, I want to linger and DO something! Everyone have a good Christmas and do't forget the reason! I had the same thought about the oldtimers after wandering around Mapleton this summer.I arrived at the realisation that my generation are the oldtimers now. Time stands still for no one. But as someone said age is a state of mind so I am still 21 and holding.

I remember Mackin's although I was only 5 or 6 when it was a popular spot for afterschool high schoolers. Remember the tables in the back on the left? That's when cokes were a nickel. Thats when one would hear "Heartaches" or "Peg o' My Heart" (Harmonicats...one of my favorites) or "Dance Ballerina" by Vaughn Monroe on the radio or from the juke box. Didn't you love it?
Don't forget that the baseball field at the fairgrounds was named after Bill Mackin. Bill lived up on Barton St....wife, Belle, adopted daughter, Yvonne.
Wight's Furniture was there until 1920 when they built their own buiding around the corner. Also same place WAGM purchased in the '50's and built a TV station out back....

One other item: Back sometime in the early to mid '50's, I was playing in your backyard nd your mother made me a "Sandwich Spread" sandwich. Now...."Sandwich Spread" was a product which came in a jar just like mayonnaise. It was mayonnaise mixed with minced pickle (relish). From time to time I still make a sandwich only I mix the mayonnaise and relish. It's inevitable that when eating that sandwich I can only think of that day behind your house on Whitney. I simply can't separate the two. That's the first time I ever told anybody and now the world knows.

Posie...I get my tickets at the lowest fares by clicking on to Priceline.com. You name your price, needs and requirements plus dates, submit, and then check back in 15 min. to find out if your offer was accepted. I saved $75. the last time. Calling the airlime direct and asking for 'super-saver' also is a savings. The down-side is: this time of year everybody's going south, hence seats sometimes full; you may have to change planes; and tickets a little more pricey right now.Hope this helps a little.

O.k. glad we lost the snow and ice. I slipped on it almost a week ago and am just recovering. I didn't break any bones but got a contusion on my knee and pulled the rest of my tired old muscles. Doc said I'd be without pain in 10 days- almost there.
Fresman initiation- my brother Mike was taken out in the woods and had his sneakers thrown away. Mom was a bit mad,as anyone that knew her my Mom was a great person but when angry you knew it. She made my brother tell her who did it and called them up and informed them that they would go retrieve his sneakers; if memory serves me correctly the guys involved gladly accomplished the task. Happy Holidays! We will be in Atlanta,Ga. with my husband's family. Anyone know of good web sites for cheap flights- haven't found any good rates yet so may have to drive. Ugh!

Speaking of freshman initiation rites.....it was Pooch Roderick's brother, Pete, who, with a bunch of others like Phil Tardy and Nate White, took me for a ride (fall of '56) to Mapleton, somewhere deep into the woods. There I was made to do push-ups and later walk home. Somehow, I don't believe they do those fun initiation rites anymore....'fraid of lawsuits.
As an aside, Pooch's nephew, Greg, and I have become sort of buddies.....we're both part of the Air Museum at the terminal in P.I.. Pooch, you've contributed a photo or two to the Museum; they're the ones of the DC-3 from the '50's. Have you seen 'em?

I want to thank both Jeff and Dick for responding to my messages. I recently had the opportunity to visit Jack Pasqual in San Antonio, TX. It had been 52 years since I had seen or heard from Jack. We were both in the class of '48. Again, thanks Dick for your message. I agree, I don't believe we've ever met, but like you, I knew of you and some of your activities. Do you ever see Paul Higgins? He and I are still very close friends after so many years. We both learned to fly about the same time 1946, I think was the year that we both soloed in an Aeronca 7AC from a grass strip out on the Caribou Road. Again, Jeff, keep up the good work in maintaining this web site, and Dick, I will probably be back in PI next summer for my 55 class reunion ... even Jack Pasqual said he'd be there. Jeff, Jack's father was John Pasqual, owner (?) Boston Shoe Store, next to what used to be Thompson's Drug Store or next to the Boone Block on Main Street.

I've been peeking in for a few weeks now, reading all your interesting comments. It seems like such a neat connection with past and present, so like others, I offer my thanks to the engineer. I readily identify with the notes of nostalgia, as I have many good memories of my childhood there. As an adult, I truly appreciate the values I learned from being reared in the often tough and severe, but beautiful, Aroostook County. Now I live in picturesque Southeastern Massachusetts, just a breath from the ocean that I used to long for as a child. I love to go back and visit Aroostook during potato blossom time, as I did this past summer - the landscape is absolutely awesome, and it is so much warmer than the beautiful winter there. I graduated from PIHS Class of 1964 and would love to hear from others in my class if you're out there. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

Can't beat the food, scenery, hospitality and service from local establishments. Really miss all the Maine "ameniies". If the viewers punch into "Discussion Forum", you'll find a photo of the west side of Main St. facing Mackin's Drug Store, City Drug Store, the old Army and Navy and A.M. Smith's. The photo was taken in the mid '50's. Up above in front of the old Woolworth's store, is where I shined shoes in the early '50's. If I made 25 or 50 cents in a morning, I walked in tall clover! The next 2 shots are of the State St. Bridge, one from 1920 and the exact same view from around 1960. Downing's Mill can be seen on the later shot.

Am from PI and took my family back to visit over the summer. They loved it, except for the few mosquitos. Plan to return one summer. Great people & weather. Live in a big city now, but still have family there. Thanks for the views. Will enjoy checking this site...seeing the snow but not dealing with it! Love this Arizona weather! LOL

Folks,

I am in the process of reposting the old photos (including the ice skating ones) in our Discussion Forum. Dick has also sent a few new ones which will be posted there as well. Having them in the discussion forum will provide a great place for us to reminisce or ask questions about them. I would also encourage all users to become registered members in the forum. Thanks and enjoy!

Webmaster: thanks for your kind clarification. It did seem overly "dark" but it still gave us a sense of "HOME" to be watching the parade.

Folks, Main St. isn't quite as dark at night as it seems on the webcam. It is dark, yes, but the camera we are using isn't suited to low-light levels. Someday we hope to upgrade to a better system!

Julie R., Kevin & boys...thanks for taking the time to wave in front of the camera during the light parade although it was too dark to see you...no...I'm still not laughing on how weird you must have looked...;-) The sidewalks are so darkened at night it is hard to tell anyone apart.

We got our snow and our share of cold weather! We still have snow on the ground but tomorrow will be in the 40's and it'll all be a nice slushy mess! Looking forward to sunny Florida in a couple of weeks. Anyone going to be down in South Florida? I'll be in the Ft.Lauderdale/Miami area from the 20th through the 2nd of January. I love the holiday boat parade in Ft. Lauderdale - a couple of years I was on a boat in the parade with a great salsa band. It's so much fun and if it's cool out - like in the high 50's and you're out on the water at night - and you're a Floridian - you think it's really cold!

The previous message I wrote was at 7:05 pm 12/7...........it's now 7:38 and we haven't seen too much of the parade -- a few trucks with lots of lights, and a few heads in front of the webcam........wish we could have been there to see the real thing, but Dick didn't send our tickets!

O.K., I asked for the snow and I got it! Shoveled the driveway and steps down to the driveway. I heard kids on the hill behind us so I got my toboggan and joined them. I did a run by myself and then let a a boy talk me into going double with him on the front. Poor decision! A child at the bottom of the hill didn't see us coming and we crashed into him; Being on the back I didn't know what happened until I was picking myself up and realized that I had a terrific headache. I guess I must have a bit of Maine and a lot of foolishness in me. We all laughed so hard, though, when we found out we had survived. We said we could have made some money on America's Funniest Home Videos. Today I guess there is black ice on the road- waiting to decide if I drive my car or not. I know I know how to navigate but a lot of the fools in this area don't reduce their speed and run off the road or into you. I can't afford another increase in the auto policy. Take care, everyone.

Posie & Julie - When I saw Good Morning America today and both your cities were getting lots of snow, I thought of you. We have had 78 and 80 degree weather this week, but the cold front is supposed to arrive tonight and tomorrow only mid 60's! Hopefully it won't take you too long to dig out. Nobody won the $60 million Lotto last night so Carol Jean and I won't be there for the parade on Saturday. Have fun without us!

Hey, we even get snow here in Houston once or twice a year. Of course, one visible snowflake down here qualifies as a snowstorm. (LOL) When we do get an accumulation of any kind (it is rare) everything closes, they call a holiday and strike up the band. (well, at least the first one is true) We get a lot of rain instead. The difference between rain and snow....Rain Shovels Itself!!!
....Happy shovelling folks. (:->)

I just loved Mrs. Kitchen. I had her in the first grade at Gouldville. It's snowing here in New York City. The funniest sight is New Yorkers in a snowstorm - everyone uses umbrellas! Usually the snow melts when it hits the ground but today we may get enough that it looks like something by the end of the day. That doesn't happen often, only in the burbs. The kids love it. I like the memories of the snow but now I like nice warm weather!

I have enjoyed checking out the web cam in Presque Isle. I do get back to Presque Isle a couple of times a year and always enjoy coming back to a place I call home. The weather forcast tonight in southeastern Pennsylvania is A Heavy Snow Warning of between 2-4 inches of snow. I told a few people around here that we had frost heavier than that when I lived in Northern Maine. The grocery stores have been cleaned out of bread and milk in anticipation of this storm. I graduated from PIHS in 1963. Thanks again for this site, I enjoy checking in and enjoy the webcam.

We may get 2-4 in. of snow in the D.c. area between midnite and noon tomorrow. It will paralyze us; we just don't have enough snow plows. By the third or fourth snow of the year the cities have to borrow money to pay the bills for snow removal- or buy salt from counties that haven't used theirs. My street will get plowed out by supper- if I am lucky. I put on my L.L. Bean gumshoes and shovel out the sidewalk. The rest of my family will think it's too cold!

Does Presque Isle have a tree lighting ceremony like most other towns do or do they consider that tree lit up to UMPI "it"? I dont recall there ever being one while growing up but we always had one in Mapleton where my dad played Santa Claus and passed out candy across from the old Turner Garage which is now Trett's. I sure do miss the good ol' days when christmas wasnt so commercialized and decorations in stores actually waited until one holiday ended before decorating for the next....:-)

We got about 8 inches of snow in CT on Wednesday, right before Thanksgiving. They closed schools and even the town hall. I guess the storm missed PI all together. It has never snowed that much this early here, in the 14+ years I've been here. It was very exciting for me. I get a little giddy when it snows. Must be the PI kid in me.

Gentlemen...
No, I'm not the webmaster, but simply a willing contributor to this great site. Jeff Clark is the mastermind behind crownofmaine.com and does an excellent job. If one of you wants a little background on Jeff, why don't you ask him to "stand up" and give a lttle personal information. I'm sure he'd be delighted.
Now, DeWitt Fillmore.....thanks for your acknowledgement, much appreciated. You're a person I've never met, but know (have met) everyone else in your family. Knew Jerre back in high school, because he was a good friend of my very first friend, Johnny Hone. Johnny and I lived across from each other on Second St.. I met Addy(ie) a few years ago at a pie social at the P.I. Historical house on Third, She was with your mother who played the piano that day as she usually does at those events. Also have read parts of your book. Kudos to you for being a published author, something few of us ever get to be.....

And Dick: Frank is my attorney up there also, just in case I ever need one! I paid him a $1.00 retainer many years ago while we were all in Bangor at the tournament. Also, Jeanne and I can have our clothes packed and be on a plane real quick, so just win those big bucks and give us a call.

Posie and Jeanne....
Good noontime, girls. Frank Bishop to my knowledge has never bought out the Albert Stevens practice. I do believe Albert Stevens is more or less retired but have never seen evidence that Frank bought the practice. He does practice along with Dick Engels. I do my legal business in that office with Frankie and see Connie B. She was sort of my contact when Bobby passed away. If I win the lottery in the next few weeks, I'll send you girls a carte blanche mini vacation to P.I.....there will be enough money to have your own private parade. How's that?

Carol-Jean-We have known each other all of our lives and I didn't know that Ted Coffin was your mother's brother. Not only that, but I practically lived at their house on Dudley Street with Nancy and Cindy when we were very young. Since nobody won the lotto this weekend, maybe one of us will win next weekend and we could take all our friends to the parade since it is up to $30 million right now! Also, Posie, I don't know if Frankie Bishop bought Al Stevens law firm or not, but I know he is a lawyer and my cousin, Connie Bubar, from Fort Fairfield works for him. I think the web cam is right on his office window or, inside the window, righnext to the hotel coffee shop. I'm always driving when we go home too, but I love to walk Main Street and Riverside Drive. That park area along the stream is beautiful. Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!

My wife said that the parade usually gets under way around 7pm, so it's gonna be tough viewing the event through the video cam. Good idea to come north with Jeanne and sit on Frankie (not Jim) Bishop's steps to view. Could be you'd better be sportin' a blanket or at least long johns, because it could be mighty cold (in case you've forgotten, we're just a short ways from the Arctic Circle).....
